The Founder
Garo Kalousdian
Garo Kalousdian was born in Alexandria, Egypt, to parents active in the artistic community. An early talent with sketch materials resulted in his attending an art school from the age of nine, where for the next six years, he studied under Bicci developing skills with watercolours and oils. His greatest interest soon manifested itself in the media of clays, woods, and metals. Sculpture has remained his primary love to this day.
Six more years of refining his art with Zorian in Cairo culminated in several exhibitions, and finally, a long desired travel through France and Italy meeting artists and sculptors.
In the fall of 1968, Garo brought his artistry, and his understanding of fine handwork and craftsmanship to the lighting industry of Canada, when he accepted a position with the Daly family’s lamp business.
Over the course of the next two years, the impact of Garo’s contribution changed the ambiance of the line, as Garo’s fascination with the synthesis of light and sculpture grew.
In 1974, Garo assumed the presidency of Alan R. Daly Limited, and he broadened the use of materials from woods to include ceramics, and in the early 1980’s, metals, acrylics, glass and crystals as well.
As he has for the past several decades, Garo devotes much of his time at Garo Design Group to assisting his clients and interior designers in achieving the look they desire, and naturally developing new looks and designs for the North American marketplace.
